What makes A-F Betafood a Powerhouse Supplement?

A-F Betafood is one of the foundational supplements in the Standard Process line, and it is an excellent product to support healthy digestion of fat in the diet. But its benefits don’t stop there.

As with all Standard Process supplements, whole foods are the basis of this powerful product, and the ingredients work together to promote the healthy transport and metabolism of fats in the blood as well as support the healthy processing of fats in the liver. And while it sounds like something you might feed a fish you ‘win’ tossing rings at the county fair, the Betafood portion is actually an extract of the whole beet plant, including the leaves and roots, grown organically, containing two important phytonutrients, betalains and betaine. Thus, the name ‘Betafood’.

Betalains give beets their red color and are generally protective of not only the liver, but the colon, as well. Betaine is a valuable nutrient found in beet leaf juice, and studies have shown that it can protect against cirrhosis while supporting the function of the liver and kidneys. Vitamin A along with the essential fat alpha-linolenic acid (once called Vitamin F) round out this supplement to thin bile from the gallbladder and flush it through the system as a detoxifying mechanism.

Why is bile important?

Bile is a greenish colored alkaline fluid secreted by the liver and stored in the gallbladder, and it has three primary functions.

  1. Breaks down fat into small droplets for better digestion and absorption.
  2. Serves as a route of elimination of toxins from the body.
  3. Aids in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K).

If bile gets thick and sludgy, it can’t flow correctly, and the body’s fat metabolism will malfunction. The way this can manifest is that in about half an hour to two hours after eating a meal containing fat, a person will begin to burp and become bloated and gassy. These are classic signs of gallbladder sluggishness.

Actions of A-F Betafood

Promotes healthy liver function by promoting the breakdown and transportation of fats to prevent accumulation in the liver.

Supports the normal processing of dietary fats for cholesterol metabolism. Some people with high cholesterol have a problem with the conversion of cholesterol to bile salts in the liver. The ‘A-F’ in this product provides needed factors for this conversion.

Helps maintain healthy levels of fat in the liver and may help those with fatty liver disease.

Contains certain minerals that support healthy metabolic function.  Iodine is required by the thyroid to produce its hormones for regulating the body’s rate of metabolism, reproductive functions as well as growth and development. Magnesium aids in the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates to produce energy, and is also required by proteins that make ATP, the molecule that fuels most metabolic processes.

Promotes cellular health.  Beets are rich in folate, which is vital for the production and maintenance of new cells. Potassium maintains the integrity of the cell membrane for protection. Vitamin A supports cell growth. Vitamin B6 supports the production and function of red blood cells. And, essential fatty acids (EFAs) support the cell structure.

Lowers homocysteine levels in the blood. High levels can damage the walls of the arteries as well as contribute to blood clots. Betaine is a vital factor in converting homocysteine to methionine, which is an essential amino acid that the body cannot produce on its own.

*This is not an all-inclusive list of possible uses of A-F Betafood

A clinical pearl: People whose biliary tracts (the bile highway) aren’t functioning properly may experience something called desquamation of skin from their palms and fingers, and sometimes feet. The skin blisters or simply peels off, and A-F Betafood can resolve this issue.

Dosing:

Take (2) tablets per meal, or as directed by your practitioner.

In summary

A-F Betafood is an essential part of the Standard Process line of whole food supplements made on their 635 acre organic farm in Wisconsin.

The concentrated nutrients are combined in a way that aids the liver in producing bile and then helps keep it thin and flowing in order to properly metabolize dietary fats. If you experience belching, gas and / or bloating after a meal, your gallbladder may not be functioning properly, and taking (2) A-F Betafood with your meals can relieve the symptoms.

In addition to the uses listed above, this is a great product to have on hand for those occasions when you are going out to a nice dinner and want to avoid unpleasant, and perhaps awkward, symptoms afterward. It’s also a nice travel buddy when you’re dining out a lot. And, it can also be safely used for morning sickness to help curb symptoms of nausea, gas, low appetite and belching.
